Rufus McKay – Lead Singer of The Red Tops
Rufus McKay, beloved lead singer of the Red Tops, shares stories of his adventures with the dance band based in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in the 1950s and ’60s. Though they were not well known nationally, the Red Tops were the most popular band in Mississippi, and their appeal transcended racial divisions of that era. McKay was interviewed in Vicksburg at the BB Club, where the Mississippi Blues Trail placed a marker in 2008 honoring the Red Tops. He died on July 20, 2014, at the age of 87.
