CLEVELAND: Delta State U w/free musical instruments workshop

Delta State to host musical instruments workshop   CLEVELAND―The Bologna Performing Arts Center (BPAC) is hosting a free musical instruments workshop as part of the Juliet Kossman ArtsPass (KAP) series on Saturday, May 1. This workshop is for children ages 5-8 and will be held 9 a.m.- noon.  Participants will meet in the lobby of the BPAC the morning of the workshop. Class size is limited to 15. Throughout this year, the KAP workshops have focused on HeartBeat Afrika and learning the technique of playing the rhythms of African drums. The musical instruments workshop will allow each participant to make and decorate a drum of their own. The presenter will be Greenville native Katie Virden Byrd who currently resides in Cleveland with her husband Jeff and sons Jackson and Joe. Byrd has a master’s degree in art education from Delta State University . She teaches at East Side High School where she has been employed for eight years. Her students have received numerous awards and recognition at the Crosstie Arts and Jazz Festival, Congressman Bennie Thompson’s “Artistic Discovery,” and Delta State ’s Portfolio Day. She was instrumental in bringing the visual arts aspect of the International Bachelorette Diploma Program to the students of East Side . She served on the faculty of the Janice Wyatt Mississippi Summer Arts Institute CORE ARTS 2009 camp, where she taught crafts. Her paintings have been shown at the Mississippi Museum of Art, the Wetherbee House, E.E. Bass, Delta State University , Crosstie Arts Festival, the Warehouse, Wiljax, and Locals. She is a member of the Delta Arts Alliance where she serves on the advisory board and the Delta Artist’s Association.
