‘Blues on the Porch’ Summer Concert Series announced
This new concert series will feature Hill Country Blues musicians performing monthly on the front porches of local
antebellum houses. Concerts are free and open to the general public.
HOLLY SPRINGS, MS (March 18, 2021) – A pandemic only means a postponement! Porch Blues is thrilled to
announce a new summer concert series, Blues on the Porch, that brings Hill Country Blues musicians home to
Holly Springs for monthly evening concerts. Each concert is on the porch of a local antebellum home and open to
the public at no cost. Gates open at 7:00, the musicians play from 7:30-8:30. Concertgoers are free to spread out
on the lawn around the porch and are encouraged to bring their own chairs, blankets and picnics.
The lineup is: May 22 – Kenny Brown; June 19 – Garry Burnside; July 24 – Duwayne Burnside; August 14 – Lady
Trucker and the Headcutter Band; September 25 – Lightnin Malcolm.

One night over dinner, Holly Springs residents Dave & Pam Zelman and Mike & Lisa McCarter decided it would
be fun to combine their love of old houses with their love of the legendary Hill Country Blues by hosting
concerts…on their porches. They asked some neighbors to join in, asked some local blues musicians to perform
and 72 hours later, they had created a company and a concert series. Hill Country Blues has a worldwide
following…Porch Blues hopes that everyone will take advantage of the chance to see their hometown legends

About Hill Country Blues
Although Delta blues often claims the spotlight, other styles of the blues were produced in other regions of
Mississippi. In the greater Holly Springs area, musicians developed a “hill country” blues style characterized by
few chord changes, unconventional song structures, and an emphasis on the “groove” or a steady, driving
rhythm. R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough became unlikely heroes of the music world in the 1990s when their
“hill country” style caught on in both blues and alternative rock music circles. They developed a new, younger
following after they appeared in the 1991 documentary Deep Blues and recorded for the Oxford-based Fat
Possum label, and college students and foreign tourists mixed with locals at Kimbrough’s legendary juke joint in
Chulahoma. Both artists toured widely and inspired musicians from Kansas to Norway to emulate their hill country
sounds. Their songs were recorded by artists including the Black Keys and the North Mississippi Allstars, and
remixes of Burnside tracks appeared in films, commercials, and the HBO series The Sopranos. Kimbrough’s and
Burnside’s children, grandchildren and protégés continue the legacy and record for Fat Possum and other labels.
